Notes: This is an attractive, somewhat tadpole-like shape (when viewed
from the top) that I don't make very often. In fact, I seem to average
about one a year! The reason why is that, despite the deceptive
simplicity of the design, it's an extremely labor-intensive pipe to
make by Ligne Bretagne prices. First, the tapered shank is very
difficult to grip properly in the shank clamps, and trying to hold the
pipe by its oval, tapered shank AND be sure to get the drilling aligned
exactly precise is pretty challenging. The mortise must be drilled at a
very exact angle so that the taper of the shank will match the taper of
the stem top and bottom, and it's very easy for this pipe to appear to
have the stem coming out at an odd angle. Also, getting the curving
lines of the stem & shank to flow smoothly and seamlessly requires
a good bit of hand filing and sanding. So, while I like the shape, they
are a rarity in LB production. It's a shame about the annoyance factor
because otherwise they are very practical pipes, with a good-size bowl
and a very comfortably rounded "hand feel". |
