The making of this pipe coincided with my discovery of the Baroque channel on Iceberg Internet Radio,
so perhaps that subtly spurred me to work on this exceedingly classical
form. I've actually written a blog entry
about classical shapes
and my thoughts on them. I left out the usual bowl carbonizing on
this pipe, in keeping with the overall "totally nude" finishing, but I
did give it a light oil treatment to cut down on break-in harshness. Positives: Beautiful in a totally different way than the Haku I just recently posted. It's really rare to find a piece of briar flawless enough to leave unstained, and even rarer to find a sample that can is flawless enough to make a rigidly-defined classical shape from and still leave bare. But, I enjoy natural finishes on classical shapes - Unlike strong grain contrast stains on curvy freehands, I find that "naked" classical shapes have a distinct sort of Private Club grace. There are two very tiny dots on the shank, but I suspect they'll quickly become invisible as the pipe darkens with smoking. It's quite pale, and offers excellent potential fr natural coloring with use. The band is solid (thick) handcut brass that I cut from rod stock and drilled and carved myself. It's also coated with a clearcoat protector, which should substantially retard tarnishing. Negatives: Other than the spots mentioned above, zip.
