This was a playful tweak on the Bullhorn shape I made as a group pipe
model. Here's the secret genesis of a pipe shape - I had a short
leftover section of black ebonite rod and couldn't resist seeing how
this Bullhorn bowl shape would look with the shank and stem shortened
to a sort of "large noseburner" size. The bowl is the same size
as the Bullhorn that just sold, but the length is shorter. This
is also a test of a light gold/orange stain I recently mixed, for pipes
I wanted to give a light color rather than leaving unstained. Positives: All the practicality of the Bullhorn shape combined with a larger bowl, thicker walls, and shorter length. It's a very chunky "fistful of pipe", which I expect will be a handy and enjoyable smoker while still showing off a touch of graceful design in the elegant curvature of the stem & shank. The fascinating thing on this pipe for me is the grain, especially the way it sandblasted. It looks almost geological - more like layers of stone than briar. Very unusual and unique! The surface is really deep and the blast very craggy, which shows best in the close-up photos above (Annoyingly, the pics taken with studio lighting and flash make it seem quite flat - all the even stain color blurs together and hides the exceptional detailing of the rings).
