Name: The Haku

Price:  390 €
                Est. $608 USD
466 € TTC including VAT for EU buyers

Notes:  This is actually the second pipe I've dubbed Haku, and that isn't Haiku spelled incorrectly, it's named for a character in one of my favorite anime films, "Spirited Away".  I think it has a distinctly asian-organic feel to it, and I made it as a follow-up & companion piece to the Chihiro pipe I did back in 2004, which I've forever meant to make further versions of, but never remember to.  This pipe proved extremely challenging to photograph!  It's unstained, and the briar is quite pale in tone.  This, together with the mottled bone-like acrylic stem, caused the pipe to be invisibly bright in the studio-lit shots.  I had to settle for a combo of workshop photos, natural light shots, and studio shots, in hopes of giving a full image of the pipe.

Positives:   Extraordinarily cute, according to my wife.  It has short proportions but a nicely large bowl, and the grain is excellent.  I was tempted to contrast stain it to bring out the grain even futher, but chose not to since the pipe is "shape strong", and I wanted the overall shape to stand out and not be overwhelmed by the grain detail.  The smooth rim shows off nice bird's-eye and will help make the rim easier to clean and keep clean (always an ugly & unavoidable problem on unstained pipes with blasted bowl rims).  The handcut stem is done from a swirled, multicolored acrylic rod that resembles bone, somewhat - very muted natural colors that harmonize nicely with the unstained briar.  I love this material, though I try to partial it out and use it rarely since I only have one rod of it.  Great feel in the hand, and very easy draw.  I can open it to 5/32" if a buyer really wishes, but it's actually quite possible to get an open draw with a smaller hole in many cases, like this one.

Negatives:  It has one sandpit - on the face of the shank just inside the mortise, up at the top.  Totally hidden when in use, and totally harmless, but I still marked the pipe down a grade over it.
