Name: Suscinio 2.0
Notes:
As people often fuss at me for, a lot of the time this catalog is sold
out. However, this particular pipe was posted last summer and,
unusually, didn't sell during the latter half of last year, despite
being one seriously amazing piece of straight grain briar from an
Italian block that has been drying for nearly forty years. I
puzzled over this, and chatting with various collectors revealed that
everyone really hated the original stem design. Personally, I
thought it was neat and offbeat, and that the heft was needed to
balance the massive bowl thickness. You can compare the new and
old here, and
see what you think. I was so busy through the latter half of 2007
that I just didn't have two minutes to even think about it, or put
effort towards tweaking it, but I thought I'd give it a nip & tuck
this week. Stem replacement wasn't a simple option due to the
hell of trying to match the contrast staining to a sanded shank, but a
very nice fellow actually thought about this enough to send me a
Photoshop mod of the existing stem, and that's virtually what I've
recreated here. It is, in truth, more generic than the original
look, but I think it is also prettier - maybe the avante garde look
just didn't mix well with the simple, classical bowl shape. In
any case, the pipe has had its stem reshaped and has been refinished to
some extent - the stain tint has been changed to a more golden color
and the contrast and shine depth have been improved. Ergo,
"Suscinio 2.0"! I have also discounted the price a very small
bit. I'll be curious to see if it sells in its new & improved
form & finish - I'll probably give it a month or so, and if it
doesn't, I'll just keep it for myself since I like it more and more as
I look at it. Positives:
A nice thick-walled bowl that still manages to sneak in there right on
around that magic 50+ gram mark despite its mass. Grain to die
for, and an impressive pedigree in terms of being very well aged briar
(Like smoking a bit of the 1960's?) The stem is handcut from
solid acrylic rod in a swirled, translucent charcoal grey coloring, and
will never fade (If it were up to me, I'd make all my pipes with
acrylic stems - I don't clench, so softness isn't an issue, and I
really hate having to keep ebonite stems polished) Negatives: Zippo.
