Notes:
Going Danish a bit? It's funny, people debate a lot about the
aesthetics of individual pipemakers, especially whether various makers
have readily identifiable personal styles. While this may look
Danish at a glance, I personally think it is very much "me", in the
sense that it differs from many of the high-end Danish pieces in a
couple of ways - It's larger, for one, and it is a prime example of the
sort of "long tail" look I prefer. I've always gravitated towards very
long, very flowing shapes, to the point that I personally can usually
identify my own pipes by their "long and slinky" style layout (Whether
anyone ELSE thinks this, I will leave up for debate!). These are
the proportions one gets when one applies the Golden Ratio of design
to the lengths of bowl heel to shank end and stem length, and while a
lot of people might find this too long, to me it's quite beautiful.
This pipe is also distinctive in another way - It's the star of our new Talbert mugs and steins in our new Talbert Pipes gift shop.
I'm not sure if any of those will sell since the Cafe Press
photo-wrapping effect for their catalog makes the actual image graphic
look rather horrid (pixelated and crooked, which the real image is
not), but it's possible that this particular pipe might well grace a
coffee table or two around the world. Look for pics of it to turn
up in future Talbert Pipes calendars, shirts, and more!
Positives:
I was tempted to dub this pipe the "Goldring", given that it reminds me
very much of just the sort of pipe one particular collector tends to
snap up. It's just an all-around beautiful pipe, with positively
exquisite grain. It's large, light, holds in the hand
comfortably, and has the sort of handcut, extra-thin bit (from German
ebonite) that should please the most demanding of collectors. It
also passes a cleaner easily using my tenon angled airhole technique,
which aligns the mortise airhole perfectly for smooth flow.
Despite the light weight, the walls are thick and it is IMO
pretty much an ideal smoking machine. The staining is my new
coloring technique, previously seen on a large number of Ligne
Bretagnes and Goblins but here applied to a Talbert Briar smooth for
the first time. It also benefits from a richer, glossier final
polish than past smooth Talberts. Negatives: I
can't afford it or it would be mine. It also has a few VERY tiny
black dots on it that kept it from being a 630 € grade 4.
