The
Best of Talbert Briar in 1997
In
1997 Pipes & Tobaccos magazine held its first pipecarving
contest. I struggled a bit but managed to get an entry finished by
working on weekends during the summer, and was astonished to learn that
my pipe had beaten out 120+ other entries to win first-place. Suddenly
I was getting email from people wanting to buy pipes, so I tried making
a few pipes that were worth selling. At this point I was still working
on a 2x4 nailed to a pair of sawing braces in the corner of my garage,
and the only tools I had were a bench grinder motor and a Dremel.
