What's
Playing in the Workshop now:
- May 10th,
2008 -
First update in a while! I've been extremely busy working on
various special orders and putting together some pipe shipments for US
and Israeli dealers. But, I did manage to get three new Ligne
Bretagnes finished up, and they're now posted to the catalog.
One smooth Canadian, and two blasts, one of which (the #45)
showcases a new staining effect that I'm quite proud of - It's a sort
of golden brown that fluctuates over the surface. This evening,
probably after dinner, I'll be posting my next big article on
sandblasting to the pipe blog. It will be a discussion of how to
"read" the surface of a sandblast, complete with accompanying photos
and illustrations for examples. The next website update should be
in a few days, when I'll be posting some new Talbert Mortas (including
an Author which will probably go fast...) and a Talbert Briar straight
billiard blast - about as attractive and classical as I can make.
Stay tuned!
- April 21st,
2008 -
Due to a mix-up, one of the Ligne Bretagnes (an unstained billiard
sandblast) that was marked sold is actually still available _ I've just
changed its status in the Ligne Bretagne catalog. It's the one at the top. Also, billiard fans and fans of sandblast finishes may want to look at this Pipe Blog posting
for a few pics of a very nice straight billiard blast that I recently
finished. The pipe is already sold, but it's still pretty cool to
see.
- April 14th,
2008 - Finally, an update for the morta catalog!
Even though it is just one pipe, it is still quite a nice example
of a smooth morta poker. Also, anyone interested in my Halloween
pipes may want to check out today's Pipe Blog entry for a little sneak preview....
- April 12th,
2008 - I just posted out last update for a while to the Ligne Bretagne catalog.
There are three new pipes - two beautiful smooth Princes and a
sandblasted billiard. That gives us a good stock of LBs now, for
as long as they hold out. I'm about to turn my full attention to
doing a few Talbert Briar billiards for both orders (If you're
interested in a Talbert Briar billiard, please email me)
and also at least one for the long-empty website catalog... and a
couple of new mortas, finally. Plus a few for a dealer.
After that, I have a Club Pipe to make, and I expect that will
keep me busy for quite some time, so I don't know how active the
website catalogs will be. I will try to post new pipes whenever I
can, though.
- April 8th,
2008 -
I've just posted another big flood of new pipes to the Ligne Bretagne catalog,
in another attempt to get some lasting stock in there. There
are five new pipes, three of which are chubby, horn-stemmed pieces that
will probably be popular. Also, the smooth churchwarden that
was marked as sold has been relisted - I didn't receive any further
communication from the buyer so I'm assuming he's changed his mind.
Enjoy!
- March 30th,
2008 -
In and around working on a pair of Talbert Briar blowfish this weekend
(one giant, one miniature), we've finished up a pair of the popular
six-paneled Ligne Bretagne tankards, both blasts. Check them
out
in the Ligne
Bretagne catalog!
- March 28th,
2008 -
After everything in the last Ligne Bretagne update sold out, most
within the first hour of posting (WHERE is the sudden rush of Ligne
Bretagne popularity coming from? Not that I'm complaining,
mind...), I figured we should try to get some more onto the site as
soon as possible. Check out the
Ligne Bretagne catalog
for five more new arrivals, a nicely mixed bunch with one churchwarden,
a bulldog, a panel, and other fun pipes. Only one of the five
is
a blast - We've had extremely good luck with the briar this week, for
whatever reason, getting pipe after pipe with smooth, beautiful
grain.
- March 24th,
2008 -
Well, that was quite a sales success - as I write this, there are only
three LBs remaining available from yesterday's mass posting.
If
you looked yesterday and didn't see one you liked, you may want to
check the Ligne
Bretagne catalog again, as I had one pipe swap-out for a
different one, so the list of what's available juggled and changed a
bit.
- March 23rd,
2008 - Ligne Bretagne flood!
This might possibly be the largest-ever update - I've just
added seven new LBs to the
Ligne Bretagne catalog.
They're a mix of smooths and blasts, including a couple of
"bare
naked" sandblasts that aren't even waxed. There are a few
other
items of news - I've dropped including the catalog number and text in
the graphics and instead have it down in the description title.
A
minor change, but it will save me roughly 5 to 10 minutes of working
time per pipe image, which adds up into more workshop time really
quick. Also, Emily has now joined the photo team!
With her
own computer now, she can take on some of the photo assembly workload,
which means two very good things - More updates, more frequently, and
more workshop time for me, meaning more pipes created. Yay!
- March 20th,
2008 - Another new pipe
arrives in the Ligne
Bretagne catalog.
I fear we're soon to be saying farewell to another of the
catalog
shapes - the large, straight billiards are running out. I
only
have ten more stummels here in the workshop, and I don't think there
are any more in the briar cavern, though I'll have to go check.
I'll be posting several more over the next day or so - I've
got
two more finished right now and one downtairs with the stain drying,
but they'll have to wait until tomorrow.
- March 19th,
2008 - The first of a steady
stream of new Ligne Bretagnes has hit the catalog.
It's a squat, fat, smooth piece, which I think may be the
first
use of this shape that I've posted. Also, I've just posted my
first "real" post over on our brand-spanking-new Pipe Blog,
pondering on whether 2008 might mark the start of a strong resurgence
in the popularity of classical pipe shapes.
- March 14th,
2008 - Well, that took a bit
longer than hoped-for or expected, but I post today to announce that
the all-new, fully-refreshed Talbert Pipe Blog
is open
for your reading & viewing pleasure! If you stop in,
please
vote in the top two sidebar polls, as they concern whether or not we'll
invest a bit in some emerging web technologies. Next up, new
pipes for the site (at last)!
- March 2nd,
2008 -
I'm currently in the middle of switching the Pipe Blog to be hosted at
Blogger, as opposed to on my server space where it has lived thus far.
This will enable me to do some new things with it - add more
widgets much more easily, and load up with video and pics as I wish,
without having to worry over server space. The new location
is Talbert
Pipes Blog,
so you may want to go ahead and bookmark that as the old link will
eventually become a redirect link. I haven't changed the
website
links yet because it's a work in progress - switching over meant
reverting to one of the standard Blogger templates for reasons that are
too ridiculous to explain, so the pipe blog has returned to its old,
pre-2007 look. For now. I will be fiddling with
colors,
backgrounds, page arrangements, etc, over the coming days/weeks/months,
until it's a bit more "me".
- March 1st,
2008 -
"Beware the Ides of March!" When I was a wee lad, I thought
this
saying was, "Beware the EYES of March" for a very long time, and always
wondered how a month could be watching me. It's likely that
this
may be a Goblin-infested month...
But, until any green things make their appearance, I'm still
working on Talbert blowfish. I did find time to finish up one
really beautiful pencil-shanked Ligne Bretagne billiard, though - a
beautiful unstained smooth. Check
it out!
- February 22nd,
2008 - I just posted three
more Ligne Bretagnes,
which gives me a decent catalog stock of LBs in at least a few varied
shapes for the first time in a long time. Now it's
round-the-clock work on some Talbert blowfish, to finish up before
month's end. Speaking of, I've just updated the Pipe Blog
with finished pics of the pipe that was shown in the "Making
of" post a couple days ago.
- February 20th,
2008 -
No new pipes posted today (I have two more LB like the last ones
finished and ready, but haven't had time to do photos yet).
However, for those who like to follow pictures of the steps
in
pipe creation, you may want to check out today's
Pipe Blog post, where I've put up a pile of photos showing
the steps of making a Fantasy Blowfish I'm currently working on.
- February 15th,
2008 - Two more new Ligne Bretagnes
are posted - both bent pear shapes, one a churchwarden and the other a
beautiful unstained smooth.
I'd hoped to have a new blog post today, but
Blogger is
fussing again and those of us who publish to our own site space via FTP
are once more being shafted. Blogger-hosted blogs work fine,
of
course, but no one has been able to make new FTP posts for a couple of
days, apparently. Grr. And I've got two article
ideas piled
up already (An Excellent Tobacco, and Ligne Bretagnes on fire).
I
suppose I really should move the pipe blog to be hosted on Blogger -
I've already done this with the "American in France" blog, but I'm
reluctant to give up the control with the business blog.
We'll
see...
- February 14th,
2008 - Happy Valentine's Day!
You all did remember to get your SO a
card, oui? As usual, I'm working the holiday, but there are three new Ligne Bretagnes
posted to show for it. All three are the short, stubby, round
apple shapes, similar to some popular ones I did last year.
There
should be a couple more LB catalog additions coming in short order, as
we're right now putting the finishing work on two churchwardens as part
of the ongoing attempt to keep a good variety of varied shapes into the
LB catalog as regular stock.
- February 10th,
2008 - As
I figured, the new laptop ate most of our workshop time for the past
week, and left me scrambling to get some pipes finished up for a new
dealer. As a result, there's only one small addition to the catalog tonight - a
new Ligne Bretagne "semi-churchwarden" that should please lovers of
wizard-ey pipes..
- February 1st,
2008 - No pipe news today, but please
check today's
Pipe Blog post
for current events here. I will likely be very busy with
non-pipe-related annoyances for the next few days, so expect email
replies to be slower than usual, I'll likely be absent from online
forums, etc.
- January 29th,
2008 - In what will likely be the
last catalog update for January, I've just posted four new pipes - two new bamboo-shank mortas
and two new "Fat Dwarf"
Ligne Bretagnes.
They would have been three, but one sold sight-unseen just
from
the announcement on my pipe blog about the discovery of the things!
- January 23rd,
2008 - One new pipe is up, the first Morta Bettafish of 2008.
- January 22nd,
2008 - Goals for 2008, number 124:
Get more Ligne Bretagnes in the website catalog!
I've just posted the very
first two LBs of 2008
to the catalog. Both are horn-stemmed straight billiard
sandblasts, in finishes similar to one that I made last summer and
liked enough to do more.
- January 20th,
2008 - Two new mortas are posted to
the morta
catalog.
Both are poker shapes, one blast and one smooth, and each has
a
little twinkle of subtle difference from the usual morta classics.
Also, I finally finished the monstrous Halloween pipe that
I've
been working on, and also finished up the series of blog posts that
I've been making to follow the creation of the thing. For
those
who are interested in such stuff, you may want to check out the pipe blog
entries starting with this
post.
- January 15th,
2008 - Just
posted one new Talbert Briar sandblast to the catalog - a very pretty
unstained "Briar Bettafish" with a smooth bird's-eye rim. Check it out!
- January 12th,
2008 - Having recently discovered the
wonder that is Last.fm
for internet streaming radio (especially in combo with super-duper
Linux mediaplayer Amarok),
I thought I'd toss up the little "What's Playing" widget above.
I'm sure visitors are just dying to know what we listen to in
the
workshop each day ([/sarcasm]), but what the heck, I thought it was fun
and silly.
- January 11th,
2008 - The updates
just keep on rolling. I've just posted a new Ligne Bretagne Collector
(an extra-large "Fat Prince") and the
last of the current run of Talbert Briar sandblasted bulldogs.
That finishes up my bulldog fest for the time being, now it's
on
to other projects! Also "new" is the Suscinio 2.0, a
reworking of
the Suscinio pipe that was originally posted last summer.
Check
its catalog page
for the full story on this revamp.
- January 7th,
2008 - In
keeping with my goal of getting more pipes onto the website, I've just
posted another Ligne
Bretagne Collector. It's a huge freehand, and was
even flawless enough to leave completely unstained. Nice pipe!
- January 5th,
2008 - Just posted a
new entry to the Pipe
Blog.
Ordinarily this would not be news, but it's gone without
posts
since November! I hope to keep it a bit better updated now
that
the holiday madness has settled down. Also, I hope to
completely
redo the appearance of the thing - the crazy "intergalactic" look was
really only meant as a stopgap change to replace the old layout, which
was the same standard blog style used by nearly every other pipe/craft
blog on the web. As usual, though, I stayed busy wit other
things
all through the year and never got round to properly fixing it up.
Making the pipe blog graphic layout prettier and more
harmonious
will be a goal for 2008. Now I just have to figure out what
CSS
is...
- January 4th,
2008 - Happy
New Year! I'm here in the middle of a hundred "to do's" for
January, prime among them being to try and get a little more stock up
on the website, which has bene pretty empty for a while. To
start
this off, there are two new bamboo-shanked
Talbert Mortas, and a
fun green Ligne Bretagne Collector
for a very nice price. I hope to do more blog posting than I
have
of late, but I'll talk about the details of that in the next actual
post. And then there is much website reorg to do, including
filing away all of last year's news entries. Ooof.
If only
the business of pipemaking had a little more pipemaking and a little
less business in it...! ;)
