Non-US buyers are responsible for all customs fees incurred in their country. "Out of Stock" messages during check-out mean that the pipe has already sold, but I have not yet updated the catalog page to reflect its "Sold" status. Shipping costs for items over $400 automatically include the cost for full insurance of the item during transit.|
Probably the best feature of this pipe, its sinuously curving shank and stem, doesn't come through very well in the pics. I worked to create a subtle curve in the briar shank, and to carry that curve into the bent stem to make a stretched S when seen from above and below, but alas, the effect is subtle and much more obvious in the hand than in the photos. It's a beautiful piece all-around, though, with deep and defined sandblasting highlighted with a strong red/black contrast stain. The depth of the contrast stain is especially apparent on the bowl rim, where it display some fabulously rich bird's-eye both across the smooth top and around the sandblasted upper rim. The shank endpiece was chosen to color match the staining, making the whole pipe a balanced ensemble of hues. The stem is handcut from German ebonite rod.
While cleaning up my workstation this week, I found my original sketches for this pipe, which show off the lines of the stem and shank a bit better than the actual photos do. The sketch will come with the pipe, though don't get too excited, as it's really just a small square of scrap paper.
